Documenting the lives of Spanish art historians

Summer 2020 Remote Research

Normally, art historians’ biographical and methodological information is difficult to find––often buried away in obscure obituaries or foreign-language texts. This summer, I had the opportunity to contribute to the Dictionary of Art Historians (DoAH). The Dictionary of Art Historians is a biographical dictionary of art historians of Western art created for the public. By identifying and consulting different academic sources, we compile basic information about art historians including their major contributions to the discipline; the resulting database can serve as a starting point for understanding specific art historians. I primarily focused on creating entries of Spanish art historians. I first located and consulted Spanish-language texts on the individual art historians, and then translated and synthesized the information to make it more easily accessible.
